ISAAC BEECHER ( Taken from the family records of Beulah Gingrich Gehrke)
On March 3, 1659, Isaac Beecher acknowledged receipt of his 1/3 share ofhis mother's estate. The will is found in the notes of Hannah Beecher inthis record. Donald Lines Jacobus, an authority on New Haven familieswrote the following to t he compiler of these records:
"I do not see how it can be questioned that Isaac Beecher was theson of John and Hannah Beecher, was born in England, and probably came with the colonists in1638/9. He is named among the freemen in 1644 and in the town records of New Haven in 1649, it showed thathe had a man servant and was fined for not furnishing him arms. March 10, 1650/1, he was electedfence viewer, and a number of times later. From 1639 to 1644, he was a member of the New Haven Tr ainband."
December 4, 1655, John and Samuel Potter conveyed to Isaac Beecher thehouse and home lot that was their father's excepting a small piece thatwas in Solitary Cove, the court having granted John Potter the priviledgeof selling the place, Nov . 6, 1665. (John and Samuel Potter wereevidently the sons of John Potter who died in 1643.) In 1656 Isaac soldthis property which was next to the widow Beecher's. In 1660 he wasfined for being absent from a town meeting.
Isaac married Mary (name not known), and they had seats in the meetinghouse in 1661. It has been stated that he was a married man whenarriving in New Haven, but no evidence has been found to sustain it. Hisoldest son was John; born in 16 45, this indicating he married in theneighborhood of New Haven about 1643 ot 1644. He made his will September26, 1689 which was proven November 12, 1690. The names of Mary and hischildren John, Isaac, Joseph, Samuel, Eleaser -- the birth s of the lastthree appearing in the vital records of New Haven in 1650, 1652, and 1655respectfully. John the oldest died December 5, 1712 age 67. The orderof the births is not definitely known.
Donald Lines Jacobus, in The American Genealogist, Vol XX, #2, Oct. 1943,pp 122-125, notes the finding of some records relating to Isaac and Hannah:
"[Kept in a locked cabinet in the Town Clerk's Office is a small old book which was used in the period between 1660 and 1700 for miscellaneous puposes. It seems to have been little used by genealogists. A digest of a few of the records is given below. The Beecher entry is of interest because it bears on the question of whether Isaac Beecher was actual son of the Widow Hannah Beecher, formerly Potter, as the present writer has always believed, or only a step-son, a theory fav ored by other students of the family....]"
The entries below this quotation deal with Isaac's possession of land that were first his mother's and others which came to Isaac from his brother William that had "belonged at first to his mother Beecher".
"Nathaniell Potter son of Wm Potter appeared the 9th day of June 1684: & acknowledged those lands mentioned before that did belong to his sd father Wm Potter were passed over to his unkle the sd Isaac Beecher...."
John Potter was the first husband of the "Widow Potter" of the New Havencolony. Since this woman appears in the records of the New Haven colonyas both the Widow Potter and the Widow Beecher, there has beencontroversy over whether she was o ne or two persons. She had sons by bothmarriages. Her Potter sons were the progenitors of the Potter line in NewHaven, while her son Issac Beecher was the forebearer of the Beecher linethat claims Harriet Beecher Stowe. In an article in the NEHGS Register in 1900, James Shepard argued thatthe Widow Beecher and the Widow Potter were really two people. DonaldLines Jacobus refuted that in a 1958 article in The American Genealogist(Vol. xxxiv, p 218) and gives the genealogy in hi s Ancient Families
